Russian term or phrase: Опера
Hi,

So this is an article about narcotics,
which I guess has nothing to do with опера,
yet, this is the sentence and I don't know what Опера might be:

- Опера не поленились заглянуть в котелок парового отопления, когда проводили обыск в квартире задержанного.

Who's Опера?

Спасибо

In the West, it would be a detective
For the narcotics unit it would be a narc

disagree  L. Parun: Agree, of course, that the root is "operative", not "opera", but I´d avoid narrowing to "police" for the bodies authorized to engage in operative-investigative activities are many: Органы внутренних дел РФ;Служба внешней разведки РФ; Таможенные органы РФ

Special (investigative) agentS

Explanation:
I would suggest "Special (investigative) agents" or "agents of the criminal investigation department"
ОПЕР means special investigative agent or detective (if police), but here it is in plural, so ОПЕРА - means agents not agent or detectives or detective inspectors or agents
investigative agent is more general,
Because, we don't know if they are exactly police investigators, special agentS from other law enforcement agencies are known to deal with investigation into narcotics related charges or crimes.
