Lo stato di conservazione del colore era stabile, la foderatura non presentava nessun deterioramento ed il telaio svolgeva le sue corrette funzioni meccaniche, di conseguenza si è ritenuto opportuno non intervenire in questa parte del supporto.

lining of canvas
Explanation:
The verbum ‘line’, meaning ‘to cover inner side of…’, goes back to the late 14th Century. It is derived from lin (linen cloth), because linen was frequently used as a second layer of material at the inner side of garment in the Middle Ages [16].
The word lining can be compared to the Spanish ‘forración’ and the Italian ‘foderatura’. These words mean lining (of paintings) and can also be
translated as ‘to cover the inside of a garment’.

Asker: Вадим, я тоже сначала думал, что речь идет о подбивке клиньями, но контекст статьи заставил засомневаться, а итальянский вариант еще больше заставил задуматься.

disagree  The Misha: For one thing, this is not easily workable into the sentence, and there is no such thing as "keys" here, which kind of makes your level of confidence suspect at best. For the other, this does not seem to be about canvas stretching.

-> Thank you the Misha for your opinion. The context is different than I thought, but my version is about canvas stretching. I think you are not familiar with painting.

Asker: Я поэтому и привел итальянский вариант, поскольку подозревал, что перевод на русский неудачный

agree  Tatiana Pelipeiko: Поддержу этот вариант. Русский текст неудачен и воодит в заблуждение - там, по идее, должен быть "дублирующий холст" или "дублированный холст".
