Russian term or phrase: бурным цветом
Does this mean something like "exploded into full colour" or is the бурный something to do with "stormy colour" or something like that?

Тем самым были заложены методологические основы “истории первобытного общества”, расцветшей бурным цветом в последующее время.

here: figure of speech, means flourish

Explanation:
If you want to preserve the style of the original, you might say 'flourish', though I am having hard time imagining 'flourishing history of primitive society' so I would go with something like 'fast growth' or 'active development'.

Another idea: adherering to the style of the original, it might be better to say 'GOLDEN AGE', i.e. 'later reached its' golden age'. It would also look good because it's sort of a word play, isn't it? Golden age - history development.

agree  Olga Cartlidge: "Flourished / gained wide credence / universal acceptance" are possible albeit not capturing the irony of the original. (Or "which subsequently became all the rage" / "which later became very trendy ". I would steer clear from using "Golden Age ").
