Expandiertes Polystyrol wird mit Wasserdampf expandiert. Dazu wird Polystyrolgranulat mit dem Treibmittel Pentan versetzt und unter Wärmezufuhr (Wasserdampf >+ 100°C) zu Perlen aufgebläht (Vorschäumen). Bei diesem Prozess verdampft das Treibmittel. Das Entweichen des Treibmittels in die Atmosphäre führt zu einem Beitrag am Treibhauseffekt. Nach Kühlung und Zwischenlagerung werden die Perlen in Formen gefüllt und bei einer zweiten Heißdampfbehandlung weiter aufgebläht (Ausschäumen) und miteinander verschweißt.
