I know that "aliquots" is used in chemical / treatment analysis, but I can't figure what "mães" conveys. Here are a couple texts with this term:

"O sangue parasitado desse animal foi coletado e congelado em alíquotas mães de aproximadamente 1010 hemácias parasitadas. Alíquotas de 1 x 106 foram preparadas fazendo-se a diluição em solução fisiológica"

"Após o aparecimento da parasitemia, que foi avaliada por meio de esfregaço sanguíneo (contagem de hemácias em 40 campos microscópicos), e manutenção da mesma acima de 10%, o sangue foi colhido, a amostra foi congelada em nitrogênio líquido e dividida em “alíquotas-mães” para conservação.
