Portuguese term or phrase: descolonização; decolonialização
This is a tricky one. The source text is making a specific distinction between two words - descolonialização and decolonialização.
They both would translate as decolonialization but how to convey the separate ideas with only one English translation available?
It's academic theory.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Hi Liz, thanks for your reply. I found this comment on the difference between the two words: descolonização é um processo histórico, que ocorreu na América com as independências nós sec. It's not so much the content that is problematic but rather how to differentiate in the English version. Essentially, it's a linguistic difference that isn't transferable "Des" to 'De" before 'colonial' But I like that delinking idea. I'm going to use it in a footnote I think.

they do indeed have two separate meanings, and are not synonyms

BTW

decolonialization (quoted above) is a translation, but not a bona fide En word, from what I can understand, hence the latter suggestion

Asker: Hi Liz, the delinking idea translates as desprendimento apparently. I think this des/decolonial is just one of those cases where academia goes off on a different shoot and the source language accompanies it making literal translation impractical.
