Norwegian to English translations [Non-PRO]
Social Sciences - Social Science, Sociology, Ethics, etc. / Occurs in newspaper articles, politicians' speech, blogs, everyday speech. SHould perhaps instead be translated as "stå oppreist, rakrygget" osv
Norwegian term or phrase: to stand up for
"to stand up for" (democracy etc) is often translated directly into "å stå opp for" (demokratiet)
This in my opinion is not good Norwegian, "stå opp" means "get up" (out of bed)

Notes to answerer
Asker: Takk, det dekker noe av betydningen, slik som det ofte er med idiomer. Man kan forsvare noe med en uhøytidelig replikk, mens "stand up for" for meg iallfall indikerer at man gjør en virkelig anstrengelse, kanskje til og med ofrer noe.
