Thank you, Brigid for your comment. The discussions in your link about "estate society" is quite interesting and I agree there is a slight historical difference.
If you were borne into a particular "stand", it meant that you were there for life. "Stand" equals "kaste" in Hinduism. In the later class society you could work your way out of your "stand" and move to another social group. It's a good thing you are so thorough.
