Japanese term or phrase: Yodogawa River
I am translating a list of rivers in Osaka for a disaster preparedness manual. I hate the redundancy of Yodogawa River, for example, but just saying Yodogawa may not be clear to non-Japanese speakers. What do you think of Yodogawa (River)?

Thanks!

English translation:Yodogawa (river) / Yodogawa river
Explanation:
"Yodogawa (river)" or "Yodogawa river" (the answer line above did not allow me to italicize)

I think your approach of adding "river" is good but I would do with lowercase as "river" is not part of a proper noun. I would also italicize "Yodogawa" as a foreign name.

Since "Yodogawa" is a proper noun, I think it should be one-word as is and "river" can be added to explain about the river and distinguish from Yodogawa-ward.

I think you are translating for non-Japanese speakers living in Japan so please ignore my comment about italicizing.

Explanation:
I agree on redundancy. I would just say,”Yodo River” or Yodogawa for your river list.

Yodo River (Yodo-gawa)

Explanation:
I would follow a standard approach as above. Put "Yodo-gawa" in brackets and in italics.

(BTW, I used to live on both sides of that river; it's very familiar too me, and you can find both examples on signs in the area)

agree  Marc Brunet: you convinced me, but the decisive selection factor ultimately should be: facilitating the comprehension needs of the target readership, IMHO.
