Butt level Explanation: It would seem to be 'butt level,' as defined by by the JIS Kogyoyo Daijiten, 1982 edition (I know it's old, but still serviceable). It appears to mean drilling a vertical or angular shaft parallel to the direction of the coal seam, and of a suitable width. The JIS explanation (below) seems to be roughly analogous to Cinefil's explanation. Example sentence(s):
