Japanese term or phrase: 舌白苔
私達は臨床と同様の疾患症状である舌白苔を示すマウス口腔カンジダ症モデルを用いて、
Here is the sentence in which the term appears. It is an article describing a clinical trial. The best I can find is 'white tongue fungus', but I wonder whether there is an actual medical term that describes this condition. It seems to be frequently mentioned in Chinese Traditional Medicine articles.

furry white tongue / candida albicans
Explanation:
I see a lot online about "furry white tongue." It's technical term is candida albicans.

That Furry White Tongue (Candida albicans)

Scrape a fingernail across your tongue and look at the path it carves. A big groove could indicate a problem. A very furry tongue typically indicates an overgrowth of Candida albicans - a yeast that lives in every digestive tract (and that can travel to the mouth, and elsewhere).

"Candida albicans" can alternatively be called "candida albicans fungus" since it is a "fungus." An overgrowth of this fungus can cause oral thrush to name one problem.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Candida_albicans
Candida albicans is a diploid fungus (a form of yeast) and a causal agent of opportunistic oral and genital infections in humans.[3][4] Systemic fungal infections (fungemias) have emerged as important causes of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients (e.g., AIDS, cancer chemotherapy, organ or bone marrow transplantation). C. albicans biofilms readily form on the surface of implantable medical devices. In addition, hospital-acquired infections in patients not previously considered at risk (e.g., patients in an intensive care unit) have become a cause of major health concern.

http://www.candidacurezone.com/candida-albicans-fungus.html
The Candida albicans fungus is found naturally within the colon and mucus membranes in tolerable amounts. However, its overgrowth can lead to more serious concerns. Candida albicans is considered dimorphic, meaning it can exist in yeast form and fungal form. Also referred to as monilia, it is generally present near mucous membranes such as the rectum, vagina, and mouth.
Candida overgrowth can result in female yeast infections. For instance, thrush is an infection of the mouth or oral cavity, which particularly affects infants. V

Although I don't think that furry white tongue is candida albicans (the article distinguishes between the two) I like this phrase and will use it in the translation. Thanks also to nackl since I believe that white tongue coating would also be a perfectly serviceable translation!

white (or whitish) tongue coating

Explanation:
In general, 舌苔 is translated into tongue coating. If you are dealing with Traditional Chinese Medicine text, tongue coating is almost an official term. In TCM, white tongue caoting is regarded as a sign of internal dampness. In Western medicine, tongue coating does not have a specific meaning per se.

Please note white tongue coating is one of the signs of oral candidiasis. So 舌白苔 should not translated into Candida albicans, which is a name of an organism.

disagree  Joyce A: Like Joe mentions above he finds 舌白苔 to be a fungus. In this case, it is the candida albicans fungus. Fungi are, by nature, organisms. You can't say that because it’s an organism, it isn't a fungus and, therefore, cannot be translated as candida albicans.

-> Thanks Joyce. I said 舌白苔 is a sign (or a symptom) and Candida albicans is an organism. Candida is one of the numerous causes of 舌白苔. Oral thrush does not exactly mean 舌白苔.

neutral  humbird: I believe your first answer is much closer to be correct than the words after / mark. However c. albicans are fungi of broader medical term, so assupmtion that 舌白苔 equals the fungi is a doubtful academic interpretation.
