小学校6年の男の子(ワタル)が、家を出た父親とそれにより自殺未遂をする母親との生活を取り戻すため、すなわち「運命」を変えるために「扉」の向こうにある世界で勇気を試すというのがこのストーリーの大筋です。この男の子に対して、同様に「運命」を変えるために「扉」の向こうに行く男の子(アシカワ君)が登場します。
このセリフは、映画の比較的最初の部分で、アシカワ君がワタルのいる学校の2組に転校してきた際に、ワタルの友達が女の子に教室で取り囲まれている「アシカワ君」を見てワタルに言ったセリフです。その前後は以下のようです。
ワタルの友達「ワタル、ほら あいつ、幽霊見たっていう2組の新入り」
女の子1「ねぇ、ねぇ、アシカワ君」
ワタルの友達「すかしてるよな」「女子はあれが恰好いいって言うんだぜ」
