On purification and defilement Explanation: "Defilement" is frequently used as the translation for けがれ when discussing Japanese folk customs and taboos, though "impurity" or "pollution" are also common. It is usually paired with "purity" or "purification" in English, though I guess I never really noticed until now that this is rendered はれ (晴れる). For that slight uncertainty on my part, I'm scoring my confidence 4 rather than 5.
