special topics in

Explanation:
At my school, a corresponding title was "special topics in ...." Although what exactly it means can vary, I think the expression is pretty universal.

Sorry, but now I remember better. It was "selected topics" in my case. These courses cover selected topics within a broader field in depth, hence the name. Title of "special topics" seems to be used often, too.

graduate class

Explanation:
特論 in Japanese Universities is often added to the lecture name if the course is for graduate level courses. This quickly is becoming obsolete, but the practice is still widely used.
So 微細構造評価学特論 would be translated as something like
graduate course in fine structure analysis.
Hope this helps

I mean graduate course in fine structure evaluation.

I would also add that graduate (and/or undergrad senior) level text books also have the tendency to be titled xxx特論.
For example, 土質力学特論.
