Essere alla frutta
"Essere alla frutta" è un'espressione facente appello ad abitudini comuni agli italiani, ma estranee alla maggioranza degli abitanti del nostro paese adottivo. Letteralmente essa significa "essere al termine del pranzo", e figuratamente "essere alla fine delle proprie risorse ed energie".
I titoli dei giornali italiani sono delle vere cornucopie traboccanti di frutta: "La carta stampata è alla frutta", "Il governo è alla frutta", "Il Pd è alla frutta", "Il Pdl è alla frutta", "La democrazia è alla frutta", "Berlusconi è alla frutta"...
In Nord America, invece, l'abitudine di mangiare frutta ai pasti è una pratica quasi del tutto sconosciuta, preferendo i commensali terminare con un dolciume. Il che permette quindi di dire che mentre gli italiani sono tutti alla frutta, altri popoli sono al tiramisù. In attesa tutti del caffè, momento veramente finale del pasto. Ma l'espressione "essere al caffè" non è riuscita ancora ad affermarsi.
