"Premio" in casi simili si traduce "конкурс" или "соревнование", perché oltre che "награда, премия", significa per estensione anche "competizione", "concorso" in cui viene assegnato un premio. Si pensi, ad esempio, al Gran Premio, ai concorsi che hanno nel titolo la parola "premio".
Dunque alla lettera "dava per argomento al premio" si potrebbe tradurre "дала в качестве темы конкурса". La traduzione, però, oltre che precisa, deve essere anche scorrevole, fatta con l'impiego dei mezzi espressivi e dei modi di dire tipici della lingua di arrivo. In russo di solito si usa l'espressione "объявить конкурс на тему".
Avendo, poi, a che fare con un testo letterario che con ogni probabilità è stato già tradotto in russo, conviene seguire questo procedimento: provare a fare una traduzione di qualità, dopo di che verificare la propria ipotesi, cercando in biblioteca o in internet il passo che ci interessa in lingua desiderata.

Perché "Счастье, доставляемое занятиями наукой"?
Felicità - счастье. Non è удача, удача vuol dire "fortuna".

Inoltre, "удача, полученная..." non si dice in russo. Parlando di sentimenti e stati d'animo, in russo si dice "доставлять" - доставлять счастье, беспокойство, удовольствие. Dunque, felicità procurata - счастье, доставляемое. Non получаемое.

Studi - per gli studi in italiano si intendono non solo quelli scolastici, ma anche quelli scientifici, il processo della ricerca, dell'acquisizione del sapere. Quindi, significa non solo "обучение", ma anche "занятия наукой", "(научные) исследования" (es., gli studi sul cancro, studi nel campo della fisica nucleare...).
Per fare una buona traduzione, non bisogna fermarsi alla prima accezione che capita o quella a noi più nota, ma riflettere, per capire quali significati e sfumature può avere la parola da tradurre e quale fa al caso nostro. Il premio è stato indetto dall'Accademia francese, non da un provveditorato agli studi o da una direzione scolastica. Ecco perché è più plausibile l'accezione "studi scientifici" e non "studi scolastici" ed ecco perché il traduttore che ha tradotto a suo tempo il libro in questione ha optato per "занятия наукой".
"Образование", invece, vuol dire "istruzione", dunque ha un significato diverso.
