Auch die Erklärung im Treccani hat mir nicht viel weitergeholfen, von Google ganz zu schweigen, aber vielleicht habe ich auch falsch gegoogelt.

agree  Rolf Platiel: die Bedeutung ist sicher diese; wie man es dann  übersetzen will ist eine andere frage: In diesem Kontext fände ich: Seen und Wasserläufe mit angrenzenden erhaltenen Feuchtgebieten... oder so ähnlich
