En français, le terme pour indiquer un morceau de tissu qui sert à réparer un accroc (uno strappo) est « patch », repris de l’anglais. Qu’il s’agisse d’un tissu thermocollant ou non, le terme utilisé est toujours « patch ». Si le morceau de tissu à coller comporte des dessins particuliers (souvent brodés ou sur-élevés) on utilise le terme « écusson thermocollant».
