Ces appuis dit "glissants" (l'appui en PTFE glissant grâce à son faible coefficient de frottement, le plus souvent sur un plat en acier inoxydable) permet d'éviter la propagation d'efforts horizontaux dans d'autres éléments de structures, comme par exemple un voile en béton sur lequel la poutre est posée.
