Italian term or phrase: diritto (vs. legge)
The author contrasts these two terms, so I do not know how to translate "diritto", which I would normally translate as "law". Here are some examples:

Immediately after, he specifies:

Here it seems to be jurisprudence.

But then after that, it states,

Where the author seems to distinguish between "diritto" and what seems to be jurisprudence...

any ideas?

Thank you.

diritto = complesso delle leggi (aggregate of the laws, as part of the legislation or discipline o)
Explanation:
diritto = 1) JURISPRUDENCE,
or either 2) CODE ((complesso delle leggi) A particular aggregate of laws, as specific part of a legislation) as in diritto penale, diritto civile (which in English will generally be translated as Law - Criminal Law, Civil Law, etc.)
legge = in my view, the author intention in this case is to the LEGISLATION.

Asker: This seems good. But if diritto is jurisprudence/legislation/code of laws (Criminal law, etc.), what is legge? Simply law? But what is the meaning of "law (legge)" then, as understood over and against "diritto"? Thanks for your help.

Asker: Thanks David, this is helpful. I think that in some passages of the book, this is spot on. In other areas, I think "diritto" may be law as the whole field of law. Thank you.

I would believe "giurisprudenza" applies to the entire body of laws, rules and regulations of a country; it can be studied and taught

La "Legge" can be a single Law Article

or

the authority that embodies written norm sources but also people, courts, structures and internal regulations etc. "studiare Legge" exists and is widespread colloquially, but regular students and Universities themselves call it "Giurisprudenza"
