Italian term or phrase: da griglie sociali
Talking about the relationship that some people have with their pets...

"Il rapporto con gli animali da compagnia ha caratteristiche proprie, molto diverse da quello con i figli, è più emotivo, meno normato socialmente. Non è «contenuto», regolato, da griglie sociali, forse più fantasioso, ed è poco studiato dalla psicologia ufficiale.."

I cannot find this anywhere... Based on context, something like "upheld by social norms"... but that's just a guess. Thank you!

Explanation:
This is a more academic term and there is a lot of google hits for it. It can work if your text has a higher register. It won't work as well if it's an article for lighter reading, for example.

"Griglie" are, in fact, grids. It can also be used to mean a rubric, which has horizontal and vertical boxes. Not sure if you are familiar with rubrics, but some boxes might be checked or not according to a descriptor. This works well when you don't want a system where there is a classification of just a upper, middle, lower, or high, middle, low, or best, okay, worst.

But if schema seems too scientific for your text, I like your solution of norms.
