Italian term or phrase: cri cri
. I cri cri che emetteva in volo servivano per esplorare l’ambiente e l’eco prodotto veniva trasmesso al cervello trasformandosi in immagini. Altro che i pipistrelli erano ciechi! Vedevano soltanto in modo diverso.

agree  philgoddard: This is very straightforward - you just have to look up what noise bats make. http://www.crittercontrol.com/services/bats/bat-noises

call—squeak, squeak/cheep, cheep

Explanation:
When referring to the sound bats make to echolocate, the proper term is "call". If you need to use onomatopoeia (as for the owl elsewhere in your tale), I would favour cute over 100% accurate and opt for "squeak, squeak" (and perhaps "cheep, cheep" if you want or need variation).

Example sentence(s):
  • The calls they send out in flight serve to sound out their surroundings, and the resulting echoes are transmitted to the brain in the form of images.
