The term was used in the steam era when the fire in locomotive boiler had to be kept lit even when the train was stopped due to the time required to turn one off 8-10 hours or to turn one on being the same time. Now it seems to mean some sort of "ad hoc repair" used to keep the train running in case of malfunction during service, until it can be brought in for extraordinary maintenance. I'm going to go with this until or unless I hear of something more authoritative.

I was about to suggest "looking after" for the second instance, e.g.: Organising and carrying out internal audits for: OHSAS 18001 & ISO 9001 / 14001 compliance.

My comment was only for the first sense of the word. In the second sense the "looking after" or taking care is a kind of tautology. You might use overhaul.

This is clear to me it is the second occurrence that has me baffled.
I've found on some IT RR sites that it has the sense of repairs that can be made whilst the train is underway

accudire means to look after or help people so the litteral sense is the "looking after", you might use something like assistance or hospitality (i.e. waiters, assistants ect. )
