Di recente, poi, sopratutto - ma non solo - nei paesi dell'America Latina, si è fatto strada un'altra interpretazione dell'esperienzia colombiana che le nega qualsiasi merito, e anzi ne fa il punto di partenza del genicidio degli indios, descrivendo Colombo come il più crudele e vile dei conquistadores.

Senza mezze misure e con un'assoluta macanza del senso della storia, come se la schiavitù non fosse una pratica ancora profondamente radicata nelle società del XV, anche europee, e le terribili guerre di conquista di quei tempi, sia in Occidente che in Oriente, non fossero accompagnate ovunque da crudeltà d'ogni genere, del tutto analoghe a quelle che non solo e non tanto Colombo, ma quelli che vennero dopo di lui compirono a danno delle populazioni autoctone del Nuovo Mondo.
