Italian term or phrase: passaggi chiaroscurali
speaking of paintings by a 16th century Flemish artist.

Rispetto a questi dipinti, tuttavia, i *passaggio chiaroscurali* sembrano meno modulati e sensibili, in qualche modo semplificati."
and again...

I'm thinking "transitions from dark to light" maybe? Or maybe "chiaroscuro modelling"?
Any suggestions?

Explanation:
I would translate Passaggi with transitions, as you suggested, and leave chiaroscuro as it is a precise technique.

The term chiaroscuro implies a sharp transition from darkness to light, losing the nuances and subtle color transitions,

Notes to answerer
Asker: I like your suggestion. My only personal doubt is the use of chiaroscuro which to my mind refers to a more dramatic contrast of light and dark used in later paintings. But I'm open to to contradiction.

agree  philgoddard: The term comes up twice, so you'd have to find two ways to translate it.
