Észak-fok

Az „Észak-fok” jelleg a kötet harmadik ciklusának nyitóversében kerül bõvebb kifejtésre. Az északiság által jelölt szerep azért különösen érdekes az Ady-életmûben, mert bár a szakirodalomban nemigen olvashatunk róla, Ady alkotásfilozófiája szempontjából mégis nagy jelentõségû. A lírában és prózában egyaránt megjelenõ „északiság” olvasata — mely a Szeretném, ha szeretnének kötet Prológjában megelõlegezõdik — talán e versbõl bontakozik ki a legteljesebben. Az Északi ember vagyok, akárcsak a prológ, ellentétekbõl épül fel: itt a beszélõ mentalitása, az északi mentalitás kerül szembe a déli életvitellel, azaz az „Észak-fok” jellegû magány szembesül a déli emberek sokaságával.

I am neither infant nor happy grandfather
Nor parent, nor lover
Of anyone, of anyone.
I am, as every man is, Majesty,
The North Pole, the Secret, the Stranger,
The will-o'-the-wisp in the distance, the will-o'-the-wisp in the distance.

But alas! I cannot remain this way.
I should like to show myself to the world,
So that someone sees me, so that someone sees me.

This is why I sing and I torment myself.
I should love to be loved.
I wish to be of someone, I wish to be of someone.

Explanation:
It is an almost literal translation but in his artistic way of thinking Ady meant the same; i.e. every man's feelings are in some ways incomprehensible and thus nobody can be genuinely understoood/reached by other people. We are so far away from each other as the North Pole.
