Hindi term or phrase: 2 वाता

Greetings,

I only saw it briefly so I may have some detail wrong, but it seemed to me that an Indian train shown on TV had 2 वाता written on it. Please, what could it be? Again, etymological info most welcome.

English translation:2 AC

Explanation:
It stands for 2nd class Air Conditioned. In Indian railways there are 4 classes of Air Conditioned seating, First, Second, Third, and Chair Car.

वाता is short form of वातानुकूलित (Air Conditioned)

keshab: 2 AC is not second class AC and 3 AC is not 3rd class AC!! 2 & 3 mentioned for arrangement of berth in the single side of compartment in train.

-> I already corrected myself. Technically it is 'Tier' but practically, it is a class lower to 1 AC..how do you explain I AC then?

C.M. Rawal: In Indian Railways, presently there are broadly two classes (1st and 2nd, and there is no 3rd Class). 1st class may be Ordinary or AC. 2nd Class may be Ordinary (Sitting), Sleeper, AC Chair Car, 3-Tier AC and 2-Tier AC.

Since you saw it only briefly, perhaps you have given the term incompletely and also not in the correct order.

It should have been वाता. 2 टीयर which is the Hindi term for
AC 2 Tier

Actually there are broadly 4 classes in Indian Railways (as Mr. Rawal indicates). They are : First class AC, AC 2 tier, AC 3 tier and sleeper class. The fare decreases accordingly. AC chair car generally not available today except Shatabdi Express. The 1A is clearly indicates First class AC.

To Mr Rawal,

Site rules cannot convey the situation. Suppose you are going to buy a ac chair car ticket in Rajdhani Express because it is comparatively cheap. Do you ever get it? No. there is no chair car in Rajdhani Express. Actually chair car concept is now abolished and exists only in the trains of short distance.
Yes, we can omit the word "compartment" or "कमरा".
