[nothing to do with Modern Greek] Explanation: For the meaning of „nostalgic” (from „nostalgia”) see: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/nostalgic www.hyperdictionary.com/dictionary/nostalgic www.webster-dictionary.org/definition/Nostalgic http://www.brainydictionary.com/words/no/nostalgic194782.htm... „Nostalgia” is a modern West-European word and it has nothing to do with Modern Greek, where it is a borrowing (probably from French), except that „nostalgic” acquired a substantival form in MGr. („nostalgos”), first attested in 1894 in a work by the great writer A.Papadiamandis. „Nostalgia” is an (incorrect) re-hellenization of German „heimweh” by Johannes Hofer, Dissertatio medica de nostalgia, oder Heimwehe (Basel, 1688), translated in The Bulletin of the Institute of the History of Medicine 7 (1934): 379-91. For the etymology see: nostalgia - 1770, "severe homesickness" (considered as a disease), Mod.L. (cf. Fr. nostalgie, 1802), coined 1668 by Johannes Hofer as a rendering of Ger. heimweh, from Gk. nostos "homecoming" + algos "pain, grief, distress." Transferred sense (the main modern one) of "wistful yearning for the past" first recorded 1920. www.etymonline.com/n3etym.htm An interesting article in German: Nostalgie: Die erstaunliche Karriere eines Kunstworts, das zunaechst nichts anderes als Heimweh bedeutete http://sehn-sucht.bei.t-online.de/sehn-sucht/s01nostalgie.ht... |
