Tο ornamentation δεν είναι λάθος, αλλά σαν όρος είναι πολύ γενικότερος, είναι υπερώνυμο του ποικίλματος και στην αρμονία δεν τον χρησιμοποιούμε τόσο πολύ. Το ποίκιλμα είναι κάτι πολύ συγκεκριμένο: ένας ξένος -προς την αρμονία- φθόγγος, o oποίος ακούγεται μετά έναν κύριο φθόγγο, αμέσως υψηλότερα ή χαμηλότερα (βηματικά), για να ξαναγυρίσει στον αρχικό κύριο φθόγγο. Αυτός ο ενδιάμεσος ξένος φθόγγος λέγεται ποίκιλμα. Παρουσιάζεται σε ασθενή μέρη του μέτρου.

Λέγεται auxiliary tone ή neighbour note:

"the neighbor note (the commonly used synonym auxiliary tone, or simply auxiliary, will also be employed in this book) is a tone of weak rhtyhmic value, which serves to decorate a stationary tone. It is approached by either a half step or a whole step from the tone it decorates, to which it returns"
