Οι τηλεοπτικές ειδήσεις αποτελούν ένα σύμπλεγμα μηνυμάτων τα οποία μηνύματα αποκρυπτογραφούνται στον τηλεθεατή μέσω μορφολογικών, τοπολογικών και χρονολογικών τεχνικών και για τα οποία αναφέρομαι στην συνέχεια όσο αφορά την εργαλειακή τους εφαρμογή και χρησιμότητα. Είναι αυτό που υποστηρίζει και ο Fields , ότι δηλαδή οι τηλεοπτικές ειδήσεις συναποτελούνται από λέξεις, φωνή, οπτικά σύμβολα και από τεχνικές που αφορούν την λήψη και την κάμερα. Μάλιστα, ο Fields υποστηρίζει ότι μια πλήρης ποιοτική ανάλυση των διαφόρων επιπέδων των μηνυμάτων μπορεί να μας παράξει δεδομένα τα οποία να μας παρουσιάζουν όλα τα τηλεοπτικά στοιχεία τα οποία συντελούν ένα μήνυμα . Οι Ide and Tanaka σε μια προσπάθειά τους να απομονώσουν και να ταξινομήσουν τα στοιχεία που συνθέτουν ένα τηλεοπτικό ειδησεογραφικό δελτίο με σκοπό να δημιουργήσουν μία ηλεκτρονική φόρμουλα καταγραφής αυτών των στοιχείων, διαχωρίζουν τα στοιχεία αυτά σε δύο κατηγορίες: στα grammatical characteristics και στα semantic characteristics. Στην πρώτη κατηγορία οι μελετητές κατηγοριοποιούν εκείνα τα στοιχεία που έχουν να κάνουν με την γλώσσα, όπως για παράδειγμα η σύνθεση των προτάσεων και πιο συγκεκριμένα the omission of the subject ή για παράδειγμα να τελειώνει η πρόταση με noun. Στην δεύτερη κατηγορία, δηλαδή στα semantic characteristics, κατηγοριοποιούν τα στοιχεία εκείνα τα οποία έχουν να κάνουν περισσότερο με ζητήματα τεχνικής φύσεως, όπως για παράδειγμα οι ζωντανές συνδέσεις, οι τίτλοι των ειδήσεων και η οργανωτική δομή του δελτίου. Βέβαια, η μελέτη αυτή των Ide and Tanaka διαχωρίζει τα ***τηλεοπτικά στοιχεία*** με σκοπό την κατασκευή ηλεκτρονικής φόρμουλας κατάταξης των στοιχείων. Το γεγονός αυτό διαφοροποιεί μέχρι ένα σημείο την μελέτη αυτή αφού έχει ως στόχο την μηχανική αυτοματοποίηση της ανάλυσης των στοιχείων και όχι μια καθ’ αυτό πρωτογενής ποιοτική ή ποσοτική ανάλυση του περιεχομένου των δελτίων ειδήσεων.

Βέβαια, με ενδιαφέρει και η απόδοση παραπάνω...

Explanation:
Although Ide and Tanaka talk about data (a possible translation of στοιχεία), it seems to me the author is probably using the word to mean "characteristics" (as in grammatical/semantic characteristics)
