This is from part of a quotation from a diary kept by an officer of the Greek Royal Navy warship, Mycale, describing the unbelievable patriotism and unselfishness of the Symiot sponge fishermen for the part they played in the recovery of the statues from the Antikythera shipwreck. The full quotation is: "Μόνο τον μικρόν εκείνον χάλκινον κεχηνότα … εάν επώλουν εις το εξωτερικόν θα ήρκει να απαλλαγούν το υπόλοιπον του βίου των των βασάνων και των κινδύνων του φοβεροτέρου των επαγγελμάτων…"

Thank you, everyone, for your help. I apologise for not having responded to your comments as you made them, but I had shut down my PC shortly after 5 pm yesterday because I had been translating since early in the morning. I had more or less decided on "open-mouthed", myself, before asking the question, but, as I was unable to find the word in any dictionary, I decided to seek confirmation. Thank you, again.

Το αρχαίο “κέχηνα”, με σημασία ενεστώτα, σήμαινε και “χασμουριέμαι”. Στην αρχή από τους Αχαρνείς, ο Αριστοφάνης βάζει τον Δικαιόπολη να παραπονιέται ότι μέσα στην εκκλησία του Δήμου βαριέται και: στένω κέχηνα σκορδινώμαι πέρδομαι, απορώ γράφω παρατίλλομαι λογίζομαι, δηλαδή, σε μια ωραία μετάφραση (με λίγο ανακατεμένη τη σειρά): στενάζω και τεντώνομαι και χασμουριέμαι, κλάνω, δεν ξέρω τι να κάνω και μαδιέμαι, και φιάχνω κάτω ζωγραφιές και συλλογιέμαι. Και πάλι, ανοιχτό στόμα.

There are references to "Gaping Dionysus" etc. But I prefer 'open-mouthed'.

The way I see it, it is probably a bronze statue representing those open-mouthed figures, very common in those times
