Die erkenntnisgenerierenden Medien auch der Ophthalmologie liefen hier vielmehr der physiologischen Begriffsbildung weitestgehend nach, als diese den klassifizierenden Blick der Ärzte in der Krankenabbildung festhielt.

This is a sentence from a forward to an old Opthalmology pictorial atlas. Talks about how photography was used at that time to document eye injuries - kind of philosophical at times. I can't figure out this sentence... the grammar doesn't look quite right to me. Here are the two sentences that precede this sentence for context:
Diese Art und Weise der medizinischen Abbildung wurde in gewisser Weise bereits durch einen gewandelten ärztlichen Blick vorweggenommen, der eng mit der Entwicklung neuer Krankheitskonzeptionen durch die naturwissenschaftliche Medizin des 19. Jahrhunderts verknüpft ist. Der Erfolg der modernen Medizin gründete im Moment der Isolierung von Krankheitsphänomenen, ohne dass es hierzu im technischen Sinn eines Röntgenapparats oder einer Fotokamera bedurft hätte.
