Während beim System-Elektroniker technische Kenntnisse im Vordergrund stehen, kümmert sich der Fachinformatiker mehr um die Anwendungsentwicklung kundenspezifischer Applikationen. Die Fachinformatikerausbildung ist sehr begehrt. Daher unterscheidet man inzwischen schon einen Fachinformatiker - Anwendungsentwicklung vom Fachinformatiker - Systemintegration. Ersterer programmiert kundenspezifische Softwarelösungen und berät beim Einsatz der Anwendungen. Der Fachinformatiker - Systemintegration entwirft eher systemspezifische Lösungen.
