Dans la même veine qu'Anja...

Si cette expression existe avec ce sens depuis le milieu du XIXe siècle, au XVIIe, on disait "se reposer à l'ombre de ses lauriers" pour dire "jouir d'un repos mérité avec un succès", ce qui n'avait pas la même connotation négative ou restrictive que notre locution.
