Prêter main forte

Le terme "main-forte" est apparu au XVe siècle et désignait l'aide apportée à la justice et aux forces publiques dans le but de maintenir l'ordre. Il ne s'est plus employé seul à partir du siècle suivant, où l'on trouvait par exemple l'expression "tenir main forte" dont le sens était "venir en aide à quelqu'un". La forme actuelle "prêter main forte" date du XVIIe siècle. D'autres variantes telles que "prêter main vive" ont existé mais ne sont aujourd'hui plus employées.
