I'm just not that agile with cut & paste, Björn. I thought I had posted both definitions. Anyway, since it is a debated term among us, it will certainly addle a few tourists. Nothing against the term or Gordon's use of it, just thinking marketing jargon.

What I said I said in jest, although the point of any tourism website is not to make you look up words in a dictionary, which is why I think your suggestion is good (and I even included a link to one such nature guide).

I'd also take into account the target audience; people may not be that, say, studious, and pages in English are usually intended to be read by more than just ENS.

This could be a personal quibble, but even when I hear the German word, what comes to mind are those two groups of people described below.

It's based on that (apparently) much-hated phrase of "perception is reality." Don't make it so.

Just tried googling the meaning of "naturalist". This is what I found:

naturalist /ˈnatʃ(ə)rəlɪst/noun
noun: naturalist; plural noun: naturalists

1. an expert in or student of natural history.
Similar: natural historian, life scientist, wildlife expert, biologist, botanist, zoologist, ornithologist, entomologist, ecologist, conservationist, environmentalist, preservationist, birdwatcher, birder, twitcher

2. a person who practises naturalism in art or literature.
a person who adopts philosophical naturalism.


adjective: naturalist,

another term for naturalistic.


It is clear from the context that "naturalist" has the first of these meanings in this case, i.e. an expert in or student of natural history.

Also, when I saw that Naturalist bit of the sentence, I thought they were talking about a painter or a naturist (same meaning in German!). I'm not sure people want to have either as a guide =)

Yes, there seems to be two distinctly varying meanings in American and British English, so it might be advisory to avoid the term, depending on your target audience, which I assume to be international since the topic is tourism.
