German term or phrase: Landhaus
Here is the context or my own explanation in German

Landhaus ist eine Pension oder kleines Hotel in der Alpengegend.

Now then, so far I have always translated it by country-house...

Country cottage would imply that it is built of wood...or at least partly of wood...

Is country-house an acceptable translation or do you have something better up your sleeve?

rural lodgings in a ...

Explanation:
I'd prefer to use this catch-all and then refine it by describing the nature of the lodgings: a pension or castle or small hotel.... There is no more a single translation for Landhaus than there is for 'finca', I suppose. You can't use 'country house' because that would exclude small castles and hotels and probably fincas too.

neutral  fm1: there are no fincas in the Alps, and small castles would not be referred to as country houses
2 hrs
-> I didn't mean in the context of the Alps. I was referring to attempts to translate countryor culture-specific terms like 'finca'.

country house hotel

Explanation:
Having read your sentence this is what I would go for. By the way "cottage" does not mean built of wood, it might have a thatched roof but that is something entirely different!

agree  Armorel Young: yes, a distinct possibility. To my ears a country house (and hence also a country house hotel) is something quite grand and therefore not equivalent to a "Pension oder kleines Hotel"

Call it what it is; albergo, pension, hotel garni, Gasthof, 5 star hotel, refugio?

Explanation:
If this is for tourism, give your readers some linguistic credit or maybe just teach them a new word.
Landhaus doesn't convey much. Jagdhof, Schloss, former Bauernhof? Did they sell off the estate?
Most of the english adjectives are so tendentious. Manor=minor rural gentry. Country house (when do the Astors arrive, dahling?) isn't the same as house in the country. Lodge in UK ENG is a gatehouse or a snob address (The Lodge, Wits End, Surrey) unless it is combined (hunting lodge). It is worse in US ENG; a cheap motel or a pseudo fur-trapper's cabin. Whatever term you use, make it reflect the level of comfort/services available or your readers will be sending reviews to Venere.com.

Example sentence(s):
  • The Gasthof zum Igel occupies a tastefully renovated house in a rural setting. Colorful locals meet in the bar. Do not trip over the Gemse on the way out!

agree  Gunilla Zedigh: since this hotel is in the alps i wouldn't call it a country house hotel, or anything with country for that matter. the style in the alps is not really country-style.

Since the hotel is in the Alps, I wouldn't use country house hotel here! Country-style is just not the same as the style found in the Alps!
