Still the translation of travel blurbs, and still French Polynesia. However, this word turns up frequently in relation to Kultstätte in every Kultur. I've got round it with phrases such as "places of cultural interest", but that's not quite right. Any ideas? (It would be perfect, for example, to describe Stonehenge - but I still don't know how to say it in English - !) TIA!

*cult* klingt im Englischen inzwischen immer ein bisschen nach Waco oder anderen eigenartigen Leuten. *Sacred* zeigt mehr Respect für die Religion der Einheimischen, um die es hier ja wohl geht.

Explanation:
One must not get 'too' literal on this one.

Here in Austria 'Kultstätte' is (also) a catch-all for "extremely popular destination". Analogous to Pilgerstatt, i.e. a must-see.

IMO, Stonehenge (if that's what your question specifically pertains to) is BOTH a sacred site and a popular tourist destination (e.g. tourist mecca). (That is, if that's still a politically correct term in these hyper-religious times! "Tourist lourdes" just doesn't have the same "must-go" ring to it.) ;-)
