Die Baumaßnahmen begannen mit dem Abriss der Häuser auf der Kehrwiederinsel im Jahre 1883. Für den Bau der ca. 1,5 Kilometer langen Speicherstadt im Freihafen wurden innerhalb weniger Jahre ca. 20.000 Menschen umgesiedelt.

merchant fleets


Explanation:
Apparently in Hamburg they like to use the word "fleet" to describe their canals. This may be why the writer of the German text chose the Dutch word "Gracht".

At numerous websites on Hamburg they use the word fleet for their Hamburg-specific canals:

neutral  writeaway: but in English, a fleet sounds like the ships themselves. and given the context, canals makes more sense.
