It might have been better to post Schwimmschuhlaufen (i.e. the activity) as the source term, because I believe it is possible to work back from there to the name of the footwear. It’s obviously not any kind of ‘running’, as the videos show. Mere ‘floating’ doesn’t do justice to the sport either, as the intention is clearly to move across the water, albeit at a very ponderous rate. I can see the resemblance to ‘cross-country skiing’ with the use of the buoyant ‘ski poles’. However, I also see a danger here of confusion with the high-speed sport of ‘water skiing’. To make the contrast clear between Schwimmschuhlaufen and Wasserskilaufen, I think we have to call the former water walking. I came to the conclusion that the ‘Schuhe’ element (‘shoes’ or ‘boots’) could be bypassed in the translation by the simple addition of the suffix -er (by analogy with sneakers and waders). In the final version of the text, the noun form I chose was water walkers.

It's from 1991(!). And it's a near-perfect match to Alison's gneven link (see Details there). Water walkers, as mentioned in another patent, is an idea from 1985, though I have some issues with calling it walking. It's more like cross-country skiing, which makes them cross-water skis.

Also, these are the only two answers I can find ENS references for. That was the whole point of the question.

Non-ENS = not convincing as native English sources

As I've said, I have a backstop, but I didn't want to anticipate any answers that might be offered. I am hoping for something better than 'swimming shoes'. They may be 'inflatable shoes', but equally they may be made from cork or some other buoyant material.

floating shoes?
water walking shoes?
canoe shoes?
Or maybe something with boots?
