Direct qualification,S.u.
Explanation:
As an ex-Chelsea player ( long time ago) I would not be happy if I had just qualified for the Champions League, Stuttgart can qualify by winning thier qualification game, Wolfsburg and Bayern have qualified "directly". Direct qualification would mean that the team achieved the status on merit after 34 Bundesliga games without having to go into the qualification round.

As Kim pointed out I should have mentioned " direct qualification for the Champions league ( 2009 - 2010)"

I was torn between using (direct) qualification and place, but direct qualification won out in the end as it seems that "direct" is quite an important part of it... Thanks too to everyone for pointing out that it was the Champions League that Wolfsburg had qualified for!

qualification

Explanation:
Sounds like VfL Wolfsburg qualified for some championship or something similar.

For ex.: Einzug in die Meisterschaft, Einzug in die Bundesliga usw.

Grüße!

You'd need a little more context in order to flesh out the translation better.

Champions League place

Explanation:
I know it doesn't say 'Champions League' but 'place' alone sounds odd. They've recently made it into that competition so without further info maybe that's what it's on about.

-> Thanks Kim, quite unbelievable but Wolfsburg won the Bundesliga this season, Bayern were only second!!! Next year we can watch Wolfsburg against e.g. Barcelona , could be "fun".

Champions League place secured
Wolfsburg - At the end of the penultimate match day of the season, VfL Wolfsburg had a further huge success to celebrate. Due to the draw between Hertha BSC Berlin and FC Schalke 04 (0-0), the side from the German capital can now no longer realistically make up the deficit to VfL Wolfsburg.
