This is from a young adult novel set in a US high school.

"Die meisten behandelte ihn mit vorsichtigem Respekt, nachdem er in der ersten Sportstunde Mike Jamis Handgelenk gebrochen hatte. Dabei war alles - nach Mikes eigener Aussage - nur ein Unfall gewesen. Er hatte versucht DuCraine's **Aufschlag anzunehmen**. Die Wucht, mit der der Ball auf seinem Arm geprallt war, hatte Mikes Handgelenk gebrochen."

Does this mean "he had tried to return his serve" or is it more like "intercept"? Thanks!
