This is more for future KOG seekers than anything else, since I believe the question is aimed at a UK audience.

That said, 'strip' would not be understood in this context at all in the US or Canada. We refer to them as alternate jerseys (for just the shirts) or uniforms (if it's the whole kit).

Explanation:
Context/readership? Where does the term appear exactly? I ask because it is indeed open to interpretation. It could indeed be simply the "away strip", for example. Then again "third strip" is also possible.

The current home strip consists of blue and white vertical stripes with black shorts and black socks. The change strip (used for away or cup fixtures where there is a clash of colours) is all yellow with blue trim

- "change strip" is as such the direct equivalent of the German term, i.e. the function being to avoid colour clash rather than simply be an away strip.
