As this is not a scientific report, I'd say Mannschaftsgedanken is pretty much synonymous with Teamgeist. It's just waffle IMO. I'd probably just write "team spirit" to cover both.
If you realy do want to render "Mannschaftsgedanken", then perhaps "team approach".

Not sure the author even knows the distinction, but at least here is one you can use if you want to mirror the original.

The competition demands of the young riders esprit de corps and team spirit.

The two are not synonyms in English: the former refers to a sense of oneness with the group, and it seems to me the latter is somewhat more superficial.

Of course then you have a slight awkwardness of "esprit" together with "spirit." My inclination would be to leave the latter out altogether, because riding is not at all a "rah-rah" type of sport:

"The competition demands of the young riders a true esprit de corps."

As I look around, I see quotes that make the two seem like perfect synonyms: Wo ist denn bitte der Mannschaftsgedanke wenn es so ein Konkurenzkampf innerhalb des Teams gibt? (That's team spirit, surely)

Jugend trainiert für Olympia-Kreisentscheid: Mannschaftsgedanke motiviert die Schüler (Motivation? Team spirit)

agree  Nicole Schnell: Gefällt mir hier am Besten. Mannschaftsgedanke ist auch keine typische Reitersprache, schon gar nicht für A-Dressur und lässt mich eher an Rudern denken.. :-)
