neutral  Steffen Walter: See the context provided: "Mit 'nahe im Forschungsfeld' ist gemeint: er begibt sich direkt in das Forschungsfeld", so this appears to be about immersion rather than proximity./I agree that "nahe im" does sound strange. Should be either "nahe am" or "im".

  -> Not sure there's a meaningful difference we need to stress over. I already "put" the researcher in close proximity to the data. That should be immersion enough. Besides, the German "nahe im" sounds awkward to begin with.
