OR (Swiss law)

There is indeed a problem with the term search interface: A search for "OR" (i.e. using capitals) does yield zero hits. By contrast, the first couple of entries appearing when typing in "or" (i.e. no capitals) and restricting the field settings to "Law" refer to the Swiss Code of Obligations. This needs to be fixed on the programming level.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and no need to apologise...it is the weekend after all! Then I'm glad we agree, this would have been easy to find through Google, and the OP perhaps should have spent a bit more time searching.

At least it was an opportunity to share some search strategies...thanks for your tip, I will bear that in mind for the future and give it a try.

I apologize for not replying sooner. Actually, I agree with all of what you said. I was merely trying to point out that while you're right (and your discussion post is helpful!), I take issue with the asker's response here.

This Q is the equivalent of asking for the BGB initialism while giving §236 BGB as an example. It takes me about 5 seconds to look that up (which is what writeaway suggested). First link:

Now, not everyone's Google is the same (personalized settings, location and all that), but not finding this is hard to imagine. In the asker's situation, I'd have simply said that I didn't see the forest for the trees or something. That happens and it's fine! But getting testy while not searching for 5 seconds on Google is beyond me.

There is, by the way, a probably more helpful way to search ProZ, though it may not always work. If you type in the term you're looking for, enter your language pair and add site:proz.com, you can also look for words that may be related to your query but won't show up on ProZ because they're part of a d-box post/reference/answer the asker didn't choose.

As I wrote in my discussion entry below, there are other, quite straightforward, search strategies that quickly turn up the right answer, even if searching ProZ doesn't give any hits. And of course the examples you give are a couple more ways that plugging the right terms into Google for a bit more context get you to the answer. I think we're all in agreement that trying to research a term using a search engine.

My other point was that it is unfair and unhelpful to criticise the OP for not having found the previous Kudoz questions and answers when the ProZ search function doesn't give any hits unless you already know the meaning of the abbreviation (which obviously the OP doesn't, hence this question).

Maybe the OP does deserve flack for apparently not having spent much time Googling the term, but not for not having found the KudoZ entries. Saying "this has been answered before" is not at all helpful if the search function doesn't bring up the previous answers.

Admittedly, OR on its own doesn't give any hits in the ProZ term search, probably because the word "OR" in capitals is parsed as the Boolean operator OR, rather than a search term on its own.

For future reference, it seems that the Boolean operator can be escaped by putting a backslash in front of it (i.e. \OR), which does give some hits, and "Law of Obligations (Obligationenrecht)" (https://www.proz.com/kudoz/german-to-english/law-general/137... is the sixth result.

On the other hand, its often useful to try a Google search for your abbreviation + abkürzung (e.g. "OR abkürzung"), and you may well find it listed. In fact, the first result was a link to a wikipedia page listing various things OR could stand for in German. If you add "schweiz" to the search term, the first hit is https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obligationenrecht_(Schweiz).

My point is that it is understandable that OP didn't come up with the previous answers on ProZ (and for a more computer-related reason than translation), but that there are other approaches to try which lead to the right answer quite quickly.
