German term or phrase: angenehmen Wissenschaften
wir finden in dieser Schrift in gebundener und ungebundener Schreibart wohlgewahlte und ausgearbeitete Aussage, welche wir den Freunden der Religion, der Sitten, und der angenehmen Wissenschaften sicher anpreisen dürfen.

This is a poem from 1773, so I am assuming it is an old-fashioned term. Does it really mean angenehm, as in pleasant? Or should it be angenommen?

Thanks for the help!

gentle sciences

Explanation:
I wish I could pinpoint its origin, but I can't recall where I heard, read or wrote it.
But Google seems to recognize it in a myriad of applications.

agree  philgoddard: Yes, I think this is better than "gentle" in some ways, the implication being that you don't get your hands dirty. And it has a touch of humour.

-> Thanks, Phil. Those who did dirty their hands certainly didn't have the time for such pursuits!

neutral  Lancashireman: Not an improvement on 'gentle'. Different slant on the meaning.

-> Just an alternative take, nothing to do with one-upmanship. Cheers!

agree  Ramey Rieger (X): Nice alternative, even when his Lordship is correct that it is a different slant.// Warm? A bit. Sunny? What's that?

-> Thanks, Ramey! It's the association of it to religion and manners in the sentence that took me to genteel. Enjoy the warm and sunny Sunday! //A cloudless sky and 15°. Even got a tan on my balcony in the late afternoon ( slurp strech yawn...)//Yawn streTch

The soft sciences include: economics, psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, political science, psychology, all generally labeled as the "social sciences" or humanities.

soft sciences (today) = social sciences = moral philosophies (eighteenth century)

In the eighteenth century, social science was called "moral philosophy," as contrasted with natural philosophy (the precursor of natural sciences) and mathematics. It included the study of natural theology, natural ethics, natural jurisprudence, and economics and finance.
