German term or phrase: Andererseits wusste die Sonne nicht, wie schön sie ist...
Andererseits wusste die Sonne nicht, wie schön sie ist, bevor sie nicht die Seite eines Gebäudes getroffen hatte.

My grammar's playing me up here. Can someone tell me how to phrase this in good English? Many thanks ;o)

but the Sun did not realize his own beauty until he saw it mirrored in the building
Explanation:
a more poetic version. I do not think that straight translation will do in such a case.

agree  Werner George Patels, M.A., C.Tran.(ATIO) (X): But please note that "sun" is, traditionally, masculine in English (how beautiful he is ..).

agree  Dr. Fred Thomson: This is the good English you were looking for. The second "nicht" in the German must be ignored (in the Englsh).

Explanation:
until she had illuminated the side of a building. That's the grammar, for the poetics one must be in the right mode, probably.

Explanation:
there has to be something more poetic than 'hit', but I can't come up with it now.
