optical step wedges, stepped density/densitometric strips Explanation: When testing x-ray equipment for output, the original object is actually an aluminum step wedge. In photography, a preexposed stepped densitometric strip would fill the same function. Or one could be produced by a sensitomer that provides the stepped (or graduated) exposure.
