German term or phrase: Schichten ölhaltigen Gesteins
"Die Geologen suchen nach Schichten ölhaltigen Gesteins tief unter der Erde"

This is from an article about an oil company which briefly touches on oil exploration. I'm having trouble finding a neat translation of "Schichten ölhaltigen Gesteins". Does anyone have any ideas?

Many thanks

Schichten ölhaltigen Gesteins
(layers/strata of) petroliferous rock

Explanation:
"petroliferous" seems to be more precise than "reservoir" (which could also refer to gas), and it is used all over the place at
http://www.gov.ns.ca/natr/meb/is/is11.htm
(also contains a definition: petroliferous = containing or yielding petroleum)

There are some more authoritative sources for the usage of "petroliferous" in this context.

David\'s \"oil-bearing\" is a good alternative to \"petroliferous\" but \"oil shale\" (Ölschiefer) is too specific as there are also other kinds of rock containing oil (e.g. sandstone).

neutral  Alan Johnson: I think your sprlitting hairs a bit Steffen. I'M sure the "oil" will be obvious from the context of Ian's document. Apart from that, petroliferous sounds very dodgy to me - it's not in any of my geological dictionaries.

-> If it's obvious from the surrounding context, then you're of course right. / As to "petroliferous" being "dodgy" IYO, we'd always be on the safe side using "oil-bearing". / "petroliferous rock" appears in the Bucksch Geotech Eng dico, FWIW

So, perhaps \"strata of oil-bearing rock?\"

neutral  Steffen Walter: IMHO "shale" is too specific (Ölschiefer) while Ian's text talks about Gestein in general.

disagree  Alan Johnson: Schiefer wird da nirgends erwähnt.
